Embrace Africa with an interactive adventure into music and culture! Your experience begins in Langa Township, where Dizu ‘Zungulu’ Plaatjies formed the famous Amampondo band in 1979. Amampondo, which means ‘the people of Mpondo’, the fabled land of the Xhosa Kingdom in the Eastern Cape, was founded with a strong desire to preserve and protect South African traditional music and to carry traditional sounds into the future.

You will be inspired by the enthusiasm and natural rhythm of a young marimba band at play (marimba means ‘wood that sings’), and when it’s your turn, enjoy personalized instruction from a teacher. You can visit an art centre and gain insight into the history and culture of the Xhosa people. Relax and enjoy a traditional lunch in an unusual township restaurant, where you can experience lively interaction with local people.

You could complete your day with something you’ve never done before! Participate in a workshop offered by a community project showcasing local art and craft using wire, tin, beads and metal - all imbued with the spirit of Africa.
